Roachdale - Howard Fordice Ashby, 85, retired farmer and former Wabash College professor died at 11 a.m. Sunday (18 April) in Methodist Hospital at Indianapolis. A 1905 graduate of Ladoga HS and in 1909 of Wabash, he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and began teaching under Prof Cragwell at the college after his graduation. He received his M.A. degree and later became associate professor of math and German. He left the field of education for farming in 1914. Mr. Ashby was chairman of the AAA in Franklin Twp, Putnam County. He was a member and elder of the Roachdale Presbyterian Church and member of Roachdale Masonic Lodge and OES. Born near Ladoga on Dec 23, 1885, he was a son of Howard and Elizabeth Fordice Ashby. He was married to Livy Miller on Sept 10, 1912. She survives with a daughter, Helen Ashby of Washington, DC. A son, Winston is deceased. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Perkins Funeral Home in Roachdale, where friends may call at 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday. Masonic rites will be at the funeral home at 8 p.m. Monday. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery at Crawfordsville.
